After the Great Mistake: Fixing Public Universities in the Trump Administration

Thursday February 2, 5-7 PM.  Humanities Room 210

Christopher Newfield is one of the country’s most important writers on higher education.   He is the author of Unmaking the Public University: The Forty-Year Assault on the Middle Class (Harvard, 2011) and Ivy and Industry: Business and the Making of the American University, 1880-1980 (Duke, 2004).   His latest book is The Great Mistake: How We Wrecked Public Universities and How We Can Fix Them (Johns Hopkins 2016).   He publishes often in the

Chronicle of Higher Education and Inside Higher Education.  Much of his critical writing on higher education can be found on the indispensable blog that he co-edits, Remaking the University  (http://utotherescue.blogspot.com/).   Professor Newfield’s talk will draw on strategies and insights from The Great Mistake, updated for the dawning political era.

This event is co-sponsored by the Santa Cruz Faculty Association and the Center for Cultural Studies.
