Dear Cindy and Lori,

The UAW letter to UCOP from January 15, 2020, presents several opportunities for UCSC’s leadership, including the opportunity to draw together divergent, increasingly fractured campus constituencies and the opportunity to imagine possible ways to resolve the current impasse. As representatives of UCSC’s two senate faculty bodies–the Senate Executive Committee and the Santa Cruz Faculty Association–we write to encourage you to embrace these opportunities. Everyone at UCSC–students, staff, faculty, and administration alike–recognizes that we face a severe affordable housing crisis in Santa Cruz. The graduate student grade strike has driven home the need to address their economic precarity. We urge you to (1) encourage UCOP to respond to UAW by agreeing to reopen the contract and (2) advocate for a resolution to the strike that avoids disciplining participants and those who have supported them.

Sincerely,
Senate Executive Committee
Santa Cruz Faculty Association Executive Board
