We hope this message finds you well. After the upheaval of the strike last quarter, the Santa Cruz Faculty Association (SCFA) is striving to continue to engage with faculty members about their concerns and to amplify faculty voices on campus.

If you are receiving this message it is because you are not currently a member of the SCFA and we wish to invite you to officially join your union.

As you may or may not know, the SCFA is the only Faculty Association in the UC system with collective bargaining rights over the terms and conditions of Senate faculty employment.  That means that, with the exception of salary and remuneration, or decisions made entirely at the system-wide level, we are authorized to enter into negotiations with the campus administration over policies and decisions that impact Senate faculty working conditions.

Since its founding in 1975, the SCFA has been an advocate for faculty: we have challenged budget cuts that undermine the teaching and research mission of the university, defended faculty ownership over online course content, prevented a proposed cap on summer salaries, and worked alongside other organizations to argue for major state reinvestment in public higher education via the $66 fix.  Most recently, in addition to providing guidance on faculty rights and responsibilities surrounding the UAW strike, the SCFA also bargained with the campus administration in the development of the UCSC Faculty Salary Equity Program.  We are currently working with the Council of UC Faculty Associations (CUCFA) and UC-AFT to collect signatures on a new letter rejecting austerity measures in the wake of the UAW contract settlement.

If you feel able, please consider becoming a member so that we can continue to grow our collective power on campus.  Sign up at: https://ucscfa.org/join/.

Members have a greater voice in union decision-making, including voting on specific proposals (like the Salary Equity Program) and electing board members. Dues range from $10-$30 per month.

Regardless of whether or not you join, we are your union and we invite you to become involved so that our community can better confront the challenges ahead.  If you would like to learn more about the SCFA or the different ways you can participate, please email us at scfa.assist@gmail.com.

Sincerely,
The SCFA Executive Board
