RFI: Changes in staff support

Dear Andrew,

In discussing issues with our members, we are consistently hearing that staff shortages are impacting
faculty workloads. We appreciate that the university is aware of this problem and has been working to
replace departing staff. However, there is a sense that over the last decade, staff support has
significantly declined. We would like to request information to ascertain the extent to which this is true.

To make this request relevant to issues of faculty workload, we are specifically interested in faculty-
supporting staff (whether at the department level or the division/center level), and how their numbers
have changed over time compared to faculty FTEs and full-time students. Therefore, we are requesting
the following:

• What has been the number of faculty-supporting staff FTEs at the department level over
the past 15 years, annually?
• What has been the number of faculty-supporting staff FTEs at the division/center level
over the past 15 years, annually?
• What has been the number of faculty FTEs over the past 15 years, annually?
• What has been the number of full-time students over the past 15 years, annually?

Please let us know if you have any questions about our request, and if small modifications to our
request would make the data easier for you to obtain.

Sincerely,
Jessica Taft, Kimberly Lau, Andy Skemer
